HEALTH EDUCATION
Kindergarten through Grade 3
We have spent time during the 3rd quarter on the topic of Nutrition and learning about MyPlate. Students learned that there are 5 food groups and which foods fall into each of those groups. The MyPlate provides them with a visual as to how much of each food group should fill their plate at each meal. We spent time talking about "eating a rainbow" when it comes to variety in our fruit and vegetable choices, choosing whole grains, choosing non-fat and low-fat dairy products, and to make our protein choices lean.
Our kindergarten students spent time making their own MyPlate to refer to at home to help them remember to eat balanced meals with foods from all 5 food groups.

4th & 5th Grade
. The 4th & 5th grade students have also spent time learning about Nutrtion. In addition to reviewing MyPlate and the 5 food groups, 4th graders learned about the nutrtients that food provides to keep our bodies healthy and growing. They also looked at some of the sugar content in their favorite beverages. It was surprising for some of them to see how much sugar is in soda...10 TEASPOONS!
5th grade spent time learning how to read food labels and how important it is to be aware of serving size and how many servings are in each package/container. 5th grade students were encouraged to be more aware of the nutritional content of the foods that they are eating, and to find alternative choices for foods that do not hold much nutritional value.
